For the next eighteen months, they lived in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where, in 1807, their first child, Sarah, was born. The family then moved to another farm on 300 acres on the Nolin River near Hodgenville in Hardin County, Kentucky. Their crude log cabin was typical of the time: eighteen feet long and sixteen feet wide with a dirt floor, no windows, bear-skin rugs, and mattresses stuffed with corn husks. It was crowded, but there was plenty of food and game and wood for the fire. In that cabin, on Sunday, February 12, 1809, the future president was born.

Tad set up a lemonade stand in the main entrance, and he terrorized stodgy visitors by pulling their beards or threatening them with attack by his pet goat. Once, using an overturned chair as a chariot, he prodded the goat to pull him through the halls and into a presidential reception. In February 1862, to boost morale in the capital city, Mary Lincoln decided to throw a ball for 500 guests under the three colossal chandeliers in the magnificently renovated East Room, to celebrate George Washington’s one-hundred-thirtieth birthday.
